I think it's an American trait to introduce a new cute/offbeat/zany/aggressive (delete as appropriate) character into long established shows, even cartoons, to try and freshen things up. It rarely works and the attendant drop in viewing figures is normally the death knell.
Introducing Scrappy-Doo was a prime example of this. I hated the little bastard and would have happily put him in a cartoon sack with some cartoon bricks and chucked him into a cartoon canal!
Puppy Power my sweaty crack!
Another instance that springs to mind is when Married With Children (my personal favourite US sitcom) introduced the "Seven" character. He was supposed to be one of Peggy's hick relatives but in truth he was just a cutesy looking blond kid out of place in that show.
He very nearly ruined it the damned pixie but the producers ditched him when the viewing public began switching off in their droves. |
