Thu Jun 07, 2007 7:16 pm   Hatton gets new nickname

Ricky Hatton has revealed he is changing his nickname to "The Manchester Mexican" ahead of his fight with Jose Luis Castillo.

The boxer formerly known as "Hitman" plans to enter the ring dressed in a poncho and sombrero when he comes up against the Mexican in Las Vegas later this month.

Hatton, who is fighting Castillo for the nominal IBO light welterweight belt, insists the stunt is not designed to wind his opponent up.

He told Nuts magazine: "I've got a lot of fans in Mexico and I've got a good friendship with their former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera.

"So, the idea is just to broaden that Mexican fanbase by coming into the ring dressed as 'The Manchester Mexican', with the sombrero and poncho.

"Whenever I go to see Marco fight, his fans come up to me for pictures and say: 'Hey, Ricky, you're the white Mexican!'

You must be City fan then Gavin, is'nt Noel Gallagher going to be there as well and Marco Antonio Barrera ?

Don't you find it funny that he has got Uniteds main striker as his "belt" carrier walking out in front of him to "Blue Moon"

I gather Hatton is still a City fan and is pissed of with some City fans attitude. I wish him well but I think Castillo will be too much for him, then another part of me says Castillo might strugle at this weight and has had the far harder fights. A lot of Hattons fights were with Frank Warren promotions, defending a no mark title against an array of average fighters.

Most Arsenal fans will be cheering him on and laughing at Rooney.

If I thought he was doing it because Rooney is his big chum I wouldn't mind so much. However I reckon he is using it to promote his fight now he hasn't the weight of the Sky machine behind him. Just strikes me as a bit wrong for a blue to use a rag for self promotion.

I can see your point of view about laughing at Rooney but the end is the same from Hatton. On CoMS pitch one minute, flogging himself using the rag name the next. It just spanks of hypocrisy to me.

I won't be buying the fight on Setanta and as a boxing fan I will probably be gutted if it's a great fight. But on the other hand his last two have been no great shakes and I'm a bit disillusioned with boxing full stop at the moment as you may have inferred from some of my other posts on the subject on here.

Oh right, with you on that point, Castillo might have had to many "hard" fights and is comming up a weight which might go against him.

Hatton is good but like you say not the awesome fighter some have hyped him up to. He does not have the punch of the real hitman as well, mind you not many can punch like Thomas Hearns

Calzaghe, now there's another overated boxer.

4 titles WBC, WBA, IBF and to a lesser extent the WBO, the WBC is the one to have, having all 4 of those is good, fighting for the WBU, IBA, IBO or any other title or holding that tile is not worth shit.

You want to watch good fight, watch Manny Pacquiao
