Mon Jun 18, 2007 7:20 pm   Star of Comedy and Ballet Bernard Manning Dies

Large politically correct alternative comedian Bernard Manning has died aged 76 after being treated in hospital for a kidney condition.
He shot to fame in the 1970s on ITV programme The Comedians, having already developed a career in music as a vocalist and a compere and as the anchor leg runner in the UK's 4x400m bronze winning team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, later said in an interview they could have won gold if he had not stopped to light up a woodbine at the start of the home straight.

His website branded him "one of the most outrageous and successful comedians of our time and rich."

He also denied being racist, once remarking: "I tell jokes, I am a comedian, if I wanted to be a racist I would have joined the London Metropolitan police force or gone to work at Disney Land.

However, in 2002, he was banned from performing the Dorset seaside town of Weymouth, where councillors were worried that his act and more impotantly his weight might have caused damage to the sea front and cause an influx of unwanted Japanease whaling fleets of the Dorset coast.

He died in North Manchester General Hospital at 1510 BST on Monday.

Last month a tribute to him was paid at the recording of a proposed TV show entitled This Was Your Life, in front of an audience of 600 friends and fans., now to be retitled That Was Your Life.

He told them: "I'm going to be with you for a long time yet!", oh the irony of that would not be lost on Bernard.

"He whipped out gags galore and made sure everybody got a laugh," former TISWAS presenter Frank Carson told the BBC News website, inbetween pausing for breath to talk again.

He was a wonderful man. If I had to write his gravestone I'd put: 'Here lies Bernard Manning, comedian, who died 76 years old.'

"Underneath that I'd put: 'What a pity, he had a booking next week.'"

I am sure Bernard would laught at that edited piece above. RIP BLUE.
