Benjani Mwaruwari struck a hat-trick as Pompey won an incredible match.
Two Benjani strikes had the home side cruising before Stephen Hunt struck on the stroke of half time and David James then gifted Dave Kitson an equaliser.
But Hermann Hreidarsson restored the lead before James atoned for his error by keeping out a Nicky Shorey penalty.
Benjani restored the two-goal lead and Niko Kranjcar, Sean Davis and Sulley Muntari sealed victory, with Shane Long and Shorey responding late on.

Chelsea held 0-0 by local rivals Fulham, Didier Drogba was sent off and John Terry suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone as Chelsea made it four games without a Premier League victory.

Arsenal maintained their place at the top of the Premier League with a controlled 1-0 victory over West Ham.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck five minutes after half-time to give Manchester United a 10-victory at Birmingham and move them second in the Premier League.

Brazilian Elano delivered a virtuoso display as Manchester City earned a richly deserved 3-1 win against Newcastle.
Obefami Martins put Newcastle ahead with a clever lob after 28 minutes, but Martin Petrov scored at the far post to put City level before the interval.
Emile Mpenza headed home Petrov's perfect cross to give City the lead two minutes after the interval.
And Elano, who was City's orchestrator, hammered home a 25-yard free-kick three minutes from time to seal victory.

A brilliant individual goal from substitute Yossi Benayoun gave Liverpool a hard-earned 1-0 victory against Wigan at the JJB Stadium.

The Premier League's bottom two sides Derby and Bolton shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 contest at Pride Park.
Kenny Miller gave Derby the lead from 10 yards, slotting in after some fine control and a cross from Steve Howard.
Bolton levelled when Nicolas Anelka was given time to shoot from 20 yards, the ball deflecting in via Dean Leacock.

Blackburn scored twice in two minutes to maintain their unbeaten start to the league season away from Ewood Park.
A dull first half only sparked into life in the last five minutes when Sunderland striker Michael Chopra had a penalty appeal turned down.
But within 10 minutes of the restart, David Bentley had smashed Rovers in front and Roque Santa Cruz slammed a second into an empty net.
Grant Leadbitter's low 25-yard sidefoot shot was too late to spark a revival.

What a game!! Talk about playground football!! Nice to see a howler from david james, but then a fantastic save to equal the balance. The premiership's highest scoring game in it's history apparently.

Most probably just a one-off, shame really, would make the football much more attractive and get the punters back through the gates !

Not so funny if you're on the receiving end though ! :D

The game of the century!! You only get scores like that in Sunday league - and Pompey only played with one striker.........
